YEAR 3

Holidays are here and we are now at the half-way mark of the grade three year!

The students have all changed since the beginning of this year. Their strengths as learners are improving and they’re tuned in better with their responsibilities at achieving individual goals. Their ability to concentrate and to work at length with others is both positive and rewarding for them. They work at a much faster pace and because they have gained the basic learning knowledge across many areas, they have solid strategies to tackle most learning situations.

They are proud of what they have achieved so far and with ongoing parents’ help, this journey of learning will be a much easier task for them.

So why not, during the holidays, check out the books available in the local library and snuggle up in a warm spot at home for this winter, and start reading? Parents, get involved with your child’s learning by becoming a literacy partner. That is, read to find meaning in the texts, read out aloud to your child and read with expression. Use different voices for the characters and share these reading sessions often. You will enjoy this and so will your child.

Introducing both football and cricket to the students as part of their P.E. program this term, has been well received by all. They’ve learnt to kick, handball and mark the footy. In cricket, they’re holding the cricket bat firmly and taking a step forward to bat the ball. They’ve participated in some simple drills together and we encourage them to practise as much as possible. Here are some games you can play with your child during the break.

Kick to Kick with a partner. Kicking/Batting at Goal Drill.

You could aim to get a target in 10 straight kicks then try again but this time, without the ball hitting the ground. A similar idea in cricket would be in 10 straight hits using the cricket bat, bat with the ball hitting low to the ground and not going high into the air.

Remember to practise those hands skills with the cricket ball e.g. throwing the ball into the air and clapping/turning around many times before you catch it again.

Football with Years 3’s and 4’s.

Rajbir: I liked playing football and I’ve learnt so many things. I know how to chest mark, drop kick and do an overhead mark. I know that when you are running with the football, you have to bounce the ball after every 16 steps.

Tamer: The footballers use more speed and more energy than soccer players because it is a bigger field.

Ercan: How do they know which way the ball is going to go once they kick it and it goes so high up and lands in another person’s hands?

Mutahair: Even when they fall down, they don’t get hurt that much. They just keep on playing.

Aayan:They can handball the ball from one goal to the next. That is what I like to watch.

Awwaab: I like to kick the ball with a lot of force.

Maryam: I like it when they jump in the air to catch the ball.

Banin: I like it when they kick the ball high into the air.

Fezya: I like it when they jump really high. Controlling your legs and hands, at the same time, is very hard.

Yassin: I like it how they catch the ball while standing on other people’s shoulders.

Fatima: I like it when they can control that crazy shaped ball.

Ayesha: I like it when they tackl people.

Khadijah: I like how they kick the ball.

Mohamad C: We use a handball to pass the footy to a friend or team player.

Faizan: I like the handballing because it is easy to do.

Humza R.: When I handball, it hurts my hand.

Ali Albayati: We need to be careful when tagging in footy.

Ruaa: I like it when they hold the ball in front of them, then drop it. That’s called a drop kick.

Zaynab A: I like it when they bounce the ball and it comes back to them and they run at the same time.

Zainab S: I like it when they mark the ball in the air.
